BYOD = reality or just a vision? – Part 1

BYOD – Bring Your Own Device – Part 1

Consumerization of IT, BYOD, BYOC and all the fuzz about that we shall and already have started to use our personal devices at work, or that our employer doesn’t provide us with a company asset anymore. So many definitions and models, it’s like asking someone what the definition of Cloud is. You’ll get all the different answers about what a ‘Private’, ‘Public’ and ‘Personal’ Cloud is etc. But where are we really?

Is Innovation dead with outsourcing?

September 4, 2012 Leave a comment

So what do you think? Do you think that outsourcing your IT service(s) to a service provider will improve your chances in getting a service that evolves over time of the contract and enables you to focus on business needs and adopt the service(s) accordingly along the way?

What was your main driver behind your sourcing strategy?

  • Cost savings
  • Cost restructuring
  • Access to knowledge and operational expertise
  • Scalability possibilities
  • Quality improvements

Or there may be other reasons…

Time-slice your day… this was my mine…

September 3, 2012 Leave a comment

Ok, today was a really hectic day!

Timeslice

I have the pleasure as some of you already may know, I have a work that I love and a family that I love. But most of all I must say that I have a customer and work-style that is really neat! I get to balance my life both personally- and work-wise and it’s something that I value a lot!

I woke up early (as usual with young kids) and got ready for work, got up and sat down with my morning coffee and checked email and did some changes to a PPT that I thought of yesterday and before I fell asleep. It didn’t take me that much time though I just started the Macbook Air and quickly got logged into the Hosted Shared Desktop session (that by the way still was running with PowerPoint running and the PPT just where I left it), and I made some changes and saved it as a new version. Perfect and ready for a meeting I have! Then off to work (still early and I was at the office at 07:15) though I knew that I had to do some special planning to ensure that todays schedule would work.

Five steps to designing your enterprise mobility strategy

Ok, I must agree with Nathalie here in her post. It’s a strategy from a “Citrix” point of view of course which is aligned with their overall message…

Five steps to designing your enterprise mobility strategy

Citrix Receiver for HTML5 is finally released!

Go download it and try it out!

Receiver for HTML5 is now available for Chrome and Firefox browsers. Receiver for HTML5 is a zero install client allowing connection through a browser to XenApp and XenDesktop. The combination of the Receiver for Web and HTML5 provides a fallback option for environments where a native client is not available or an option.

Key new features include:

  • Google Chrome (version 19+) & Mozilla Firefox (version 11+) browsers on Windows and Mac desktops
  • In-session Tool bar that can move and close
    • Copy/Paste text
    • Key to send Ctrl+Alt+Del to desktop session
  • External access of XenApp applications and XenDesktop via Access Gateway
  • Direct internal access of XenApp applications
  • Performance enhancements

Will download and try it out ASAP to see if it’s useful and delivers a good user experience!

Cheers!

Surface – will it? Yes, and it’s not that far away…

But will it fly? My opinion is that the RT version is only going to take of if it’s priced low, I have a hard time seeing that all the iOS and Android developers all of a sudden just go over to Win 8 app development soon and that’s going to be the problem.

90 days later if the rumors are true the Pro version will be available, and that will definitely  be a success unless I’m totally wrong. Why? Because all people that work in todays corporations who wants an iPad at work can now almost get one. IT departments has an issue with the whole BYOD challenge and how to allow people to use their personal devices at work, and some have of course also purchased the iPad’s as a corporate asset but those are few I’d say. But now with a Windows based device enterprise IT will have to adopt because all of these are Microsoft shops. There is a demand out there! But it’s going to be interesting to see how well it’s received, how long it will take for IT to “bring them into” the managed client service offerings. And how quick and agile will the major service providers be in adding this into their offerings, they have to have a strategy for this already (I hope).

This new device also makes it easier for architects to validate their future strategy and wanted positions in terms of how to support a more mobile and remote workplace, I think that this device fits most enterprise architectures without thinking of adding major MDM or MAM (wow, I have to make a post of this as well, DON’T MANAGE THE DEVICES!) solutions that have to support iOS, Android, Blackberry etc. This device is just another part of the Microsoft puzzle that will take a big market share within the enterprise corporations.

I just love my Macbook Air, iPad and iPhone! The whole concept and user experience is awesome and I must say that I don’t think that I’ll go back to the Windows world, but let’s see what Microsoft comes out with! And I hope that Microsoft get it right this time, they have to! But will the end-user that have the option to choose an iPad or Surface choose Surface? I don’t think so, but he/she may be forced to though IT will now support this device and not the iPad, we may end up in a situation where the device independence and BYOD concept gets more “locked” again which wouldn’t be good! Stop caring about the devices from a management point of view (unless you need to do asset mgmt of course for corporate assets), manage, secure and control the apps and data on them instead of manage, secure and control the whole device!

Cheers!

Amazon Glacier – $0.01 per GB / month!!

Ok, this is really interesting I must say!

How much do you pay for enterprise storage today if you do the bottom up costing of all cost items (datacenter, HW, SW, staff, life-cycle mgmt etc…)?

How do you like $0.01 per GB / month? That is attractive! But what are the caveats? Need to go through the service offerings more in detail but it’s absolutely something that I think businesses will look at.

And here you have the full service description;

http://aws.amazon.com/glacier/

Let’s try this out later and dig a bit deeper and see if it’s as good as it looks on paper, and how “enterprise ready” are they in terms of security etc?

Cheers!

Eight I’s of Infinite Innovation

I must say that this article was a pleasure to read, and I hope that more people read it!

It’s actually really frightening of how I sometime see and hear companies managing their Business and IT innovations. THEY DON’T HAVE A STRATEGY OR PROCESSES in place, or way of working when it comes to managing innovation ideas!

I think it’s about time to address this, so please read this great article and think about how you and your organization promote and handle the innovations at your company!
